“I did X, and everyone hated it.”
” I did X, and everyone loved it, except for X”
Two different scenarios part of the same problem.
Should you trust what other people tell you?
Here’s the short answer: Maybe
Some people will have it out for you, your business, your 360 review–all of it.
Why? Because they can.
Here’s the real question(s) you need to ask yourself:
- Do the people giving you feedback have your best interests in mind?
- Have they achieved the things you want to achieve?
- Is the feedback coming from an objective place?
If not, ignore them. They are HATERS.
That’s worth repeating: If they haven’t done what you’re trying to do and don’t have your best interests in mind then forget ’em.
On the other hand, If they care about you and have done the things you are trying to do, then take ’em on board.
This kind of feedback is constructive and empowering.
It comes from a place of love.
So, how do you know when it’s love?
Taking a Second Opinion
I recently went to a dentist here in California. Unlike my dentist in D.C., I trusted them.
“Take my money already!,” I thought to myself. WHy?
Because it came from a place of trust. It came from a place of love. I can’t explain it. It wasn’t a hard sell, I just trusted these folks.
“Want this $3500 Invisalign? Heck yea I do, sign me up! I want Tom Cruise teeth!
Contrast this with the hard sell: It’s fake, try-hard and icky. It makes me question your humanity. It makes me wonder how you sleep at night. Something like a used car salesman comes to mind.
The people who love you will make you feel loved. They take their profession seriously. It’s not about the quick sale, it’s about the longterm fan. I’ll take it a step further: It’s the raving fan. It’s the connection. And nothing– fricking nothing–can replace that.
I’m not just trusting you with my teeth. I’m trusting you with my life, my self-confidence, my long-term livelihood!
I want teeth, a white smile, an ability to step out into the world and say, “Here I am, ain’t I beautiful?”
That’s the difference. That’s the juice.
This place gave me the juice, not the bill.
I’m a lifelong fan now. Why? Because I trust them. They’re masters of their craft. I give them my business, my smile, and a slice of my future.
If you’re unsure of something, consider taking a second opinion. But when you do, know who you’re taking it from.
Knowing the difference will help you move up faster.
