What is wellness?
Is it physical, mental, something else?
I’ll put a stake in the ground here.
You are more than your body and your mind. You are also spirit.
And, if you’re not the “spiritual type,” just take a moment to hear me out. Spirituality doesn’t have to be synonymous with organized religion. Spirituality, at its source, is simply being in touch with spirit (you). The spirit of you, when you get in contact with it, is a form of self-awareness.
So, how do you become more self-aware, and hence, spiritual? Meditation is the obvious answer. What’s meditation? It’s focus.
Meditation is great because it connects you to the present moment. Not yesterday or tomorrow, but right now. The benefit of this is that you’re able to observe your thoughts, your stressors, your anxiety, all in real time. Instead of rushing through these things and dealing with them in a potentially irrational way, you’re able to process them with a clear head. You become the observer of your thoughts.
Imagine getting extremely upset at someone and blowing up on them. You might say something you regret. What if instead, you stayed with the feeling consciously, and, without lashing out or overreacting, simply observed it? That’s a powerful skill.
